British Thermal Units (BTUs) are the standard heat measurement for gas stoves. Watts are the standard for sizing electric stoves. A gas stove requires a more powerful hood than an electric burner.

To calculate the required CFM for a gas range hood, just divide the total amount of BTUs by 100.

This is a standard range hood height over a gas stovetop. Let’s pretend that this 48″ cooktop has six burners and a griddle. Each burner has a different BTU output, with the smaller ones being 8,000 and the larger ones being 12,000. With three of each, your total burner output is 60,000 BTUs. 20,000 BTUs are required to properly heat the griddle.

Total BTU output from the stove top is 80,000. According to our formula above, you’ll need at least 800 CFM of power to move the air equivalent to 10,000 BTUs.
